How to get your license in Washington

How do I get my license? (under 18)
Enroll in a Teen Driver’s Education course, get your instruction permit from the WA Department of Licensing, complete your behind-the-wheel training, then pass the knowledge and skills tests. Students can get a permit before age 15½ with a waiver showing they are enrolled in a Teen Driver’s Education course.
How do I get my license? (18 or older)
Pre-apply for your permit online, pass the written knowledge exam, then get your instruction permit at a WA DOL office. Practice with our instructors, then pass the driving skills exam to earn your license. See our Adult Learning page for the full step-by-step.
